“O you who believe! If it is told to you to make space in your gatherings, then make space (for others), and God will make space for you.”
[The Holy Quran, 58:11]
In keeping with Qawsain’s mandate to be an accessible and inclusive space for all of its students, this accessibility plan has been drafted with the intention of removing the barriers to learning and participation that people with disabilities may face.
Barriers to Inclusion
Examples to barriers include the following:
- Attitude – when people think and act based upon false ideas, like:
- Making decisions about people with disabilities without including them
- Not believing that a person with a disability can contribute to the workforce
- Physical – When obstacles make access difficult, like:
- A washroom with an accessible stall but no automatic door opener
- Hosting a meeting in a space with no wheelchair access
- Information or communication – when communication methods do not reach people with disabilities, like:
- Using small print or not providing large-print versions of material
- Videos, events, or meetings that do not have closed captions
- Systemic – when an organization’s policies or procedures aren’t inclusive, like:
- Not providing an American Sign Language interpreter or closed captioning
- Requiring a driver’s license for a job when another form of transportation could be used
- Technology – when technology can’t be accessed by people with disabilities, like:
- Websites, documents, or databases that are not accessible for screen readers
- Website graphs and charts do not have text to explain them
- Sensory – When lights, sounds or smells prevent participation in the environment, like:
- Co-workers wearing perfume in the workplace
- Use of fluorescent lighting in the workplace.
Accessibility BC Plan
As outlined on the Accessibility BC website (https://bcaccessibilityhub.ca/), Qawsain Knowledge House will strive to meet the three requirements of the Accessible BC act in the following manner.
Establish a Committee:
The first step in Qawsain’s plan is to either establish or join an already existing accessibility committee.
The responsibility for this decision falls upon the Principal, in conversation with the Administrator and the Authority’s Head.
Develop a Plan:
Qawsain will assess the level of accessibility in our school facilities to identify strengths and needs.
The school will then develop a plan to meet the requirements of the accessibility act.
Get Feedback:
As we develop and implement our plan, we will solicit feedback from the community primarily through our website, where we will post the accessibility plan.
We will also discuss this plan with parents during our parent-teacher meetings to solicit their input about what needs are most pressing for our student population.
